Most ACCA resits trace back to a handful of avoidable errors. Learn them early and the ACCA course becomes far more manageable.
1. Taking too many papers at once
Ambition is good, but overloading leads to shallow preparation. Match the number of papers to your available hours.
2. Starting practice too late
Reading the notes is not enough. Begin question practice as soon as you finish each topic.
3. Ignoring the examiner's reports
These reports show where candidates lose marks. Reading them improves exam technique.
4. Weak time management in the exam
Spend time in proportion to marks. Do not get stuck on a single question.
5. Skipping mock exams
Timed mocks reveal gaps in speed and understanding. Treat them as essential, not optional.
6. Neglecting foundation papers
Weak knowledge in early papers hurts later ones, especially in financial reporting and management accounting.
7. Memorising instead of understanding
Case-based papers reward application. Be able to explain why, not just what.
8. Missing registration and booking deadlines
Check exam windows and booking dates early to avoid late fees or delays .
9. Delaying practical experience
Start the practical experience record early so it does not hold up membership .
10. Ignoring ethics
Ethics appears across the qualification and in the ethics module. Treat it seriously.
11. Studying alone when you need help
If you struggle with a paper, join structured ACCA classes or a study group rather than losing months.
12. Not reviewing mistakes
Keep a mistake log and revisit it before every exam.
A quick prevention checklist
- Plan paper combinations carefully.
- Practise questions weekly.
- Take at least a couple of full mocks.
- Read examiner's comments.
- Review your error log.
What to do after a failed attempt
Request feedback if available, analyse which areas cost marks, adjust your plan and rebook promptly. A resit is a setback, not the end.
Stay consistent
Steady weekly study beats occasional cramming in the ACCA course.
